Setting up replication

Configuring replication is an involved that contains many steps. The process we will discuss in detail through the remainder of this chapter is as follows:

  1. Install replication services and setup the distribution database
  2. Configure distribution options
  3. Create a publication
  4. Create articles
  5. Create subscriptions
  6. Define schedules
  7. Synchronize publisher and subscriber

Install replication services

It should be noted that all of the steps we are going to perform can be accomplished using stored procedures that ship with SQL Server. We’ll be using the GUI instead as it lends itself better to learning and managing replication. If you haven’t already, start up Enterprise Manager.

The first thing we need to do is to enable the replication services and set up the distribution database. Select Tools | Replication | Configure Publishing and Subscribers as shown in Figure 14-10.
